Swansea University continues to advance in QS World University Rankings by Subject

Swansea University has delivered its best-ever performance in a leading global university ranking by subject for the second year in a row.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 is produced by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds. To compile the rankings, QS assessed academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact, analysing over 16.4 million unique research papers, producing close to 117.8 million citations. 1,597 institutions were ranked across 54 specific subjects, categorised into five broad subject areas.

According to the latest rankings, Swansea University has:

  • Increased the number of specific subjects achieving a world rank from 20 to 23, with the addition of Civil Engineering, Education and Hospitality and Leisure Management this year.
  • Improved its rankings in 11 subjects.
  • Ranked among the world top 100 in four subjects.
  • Retained its ranking in a further seven subjects.

In the QS rankings, universities are compared across a range of metrics designed to measure their performance against research excellence (research reputation and research citation impact) and employers’ preferences for graduate recruitment.

An overview of the subject performances in this year’s ranking shows the subjects have improved academic and employer reputations.

Subjects at Swansea University which feature in the global top 200 include:

  • Classics & Ancient History – 51-90
  • Sports-related subjects – 51-100
  • Materials Science – 95
  • Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering – 96
  • Business &Management Studies – 139
  • English Language and Literature – 101-150
  • Hospitality and Leisure Management – 151-160
  • Law – 101-150
  • Chemical Engineering – 151-200
